8th High Latitude Dust Workshop

Summary

High Latitude Dust Workshop 2024

In-situ measurements, remote sensing, modeling, long-range transport, and impacts of HLD and low latitude dust in the Arctic, emphasizing CAMS User engagement in Iceland.

The 8th HLD Workshop takes place in Reykjavik on 13-14 February 2024 and includes online talks. The overarching aims of this interdisciplinary workshop are to discuss HLD field measurements, monitoring of dust and HLD sources, role of permafrost in HLD research, long-range transport of HLD as well as of low latitude dust towards the Arctic with related climate impacts, role of aerosols in high latitude environments, and global dust and HLD networks.

Venue: Agricultural University of Iceland (AUI), Arleynir 22, Keldnaholt, Reykjavik, Iceland

There will be a unique opportunity to attend the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) User engagement session in Iceland with experts on aerosol monitoring and modeling from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), World Meteorological Organization Sand and Dust Storm Warning Advisory and Assessment System (WMO SDS WAS) and Finish Meteorological Institute (FMI). Agenda to the CAMS session is here

Topics of interest:

• Observing effects and extremes of HLD
• Sources of HLD
• Modelling and forecasting of HLD
• Satellite detection of HLD
• HLD and climate change
• Relevance of HLD for society/users
• Arctic aerosols and air pollution – – Black carbon, wild fire emissions, volcanic emissions, firework emissions, microplastics, mining emissions, etc.
• Climate and environmental impacts of dust and aerosol at high latitudes
• CAMS engagement and future use needs in Iceland
• Global dust, aerosol and HLD networks
