The Barcelona Dust Forecast Center presented at WHO Consultation meeting on air quality and health in the Eastern Mediterranean Region
According to the World Health Organization, environmental hazards are responsible for about 24% of the total burden of disease (including more than 1 million deaths and 38 million disability-adjusted life years lost each year) in the Eastern Mediterranean Region. The health impact of environmental risks is reflected in terms of both communicable diseases and noncommunicable diseases in all countries.
Regional strategy for health and the environment in the Region and framework for action 2014–2019 have been designed and are ready for implementation. The key objective is to support countries of the Region in their concerted multisectoral efforts to reduce the toll of morbidity and premature mortality caused by environmental risks.
A Regional consultation meeting on air quality and health has been held in Amman, Jordan, 10-11 December 2014. The SDS-WAS Regional Center for Northern Africa, Middle East and Europe and the Barcelona Dust Foreecast Center have been presented there as the key actors to move towards an early warning system for dust.
