The Barcelona Dust Forecast Center presented at the 1st International Conference on Dust in Ahvaz, Iran
The Barcelona Dust Forecast Center has been presented at the First International Conference on Dust, held at the Shahid Chamran University in Ahvaz, capital city of the Iranian province of Khuzestan. The Conference took place between 2 and 4 March and was mainly focused on strategies to control natural and anthropogenic dust emissions, methods to mitigate the impacts and relationship between dust storms and climate change.
Khuzestan has been identified as one of the top regions in the world according to dust storm occurrence. Moreover, since the 1990's there has been an average increase in the number of dust events, so that Ahvaz has the highest count of airborne particles out of 1,100 urban areas around the world (WHO, 2011). The main causes are drought and desertification. Also, abandonment of agricultural land and depletion of lakes and marshes. Most wetlands in south Iraq have been dried up because of dam construction and indiscriminate use of water for agriculture in the Tigris/Euphrates basin.
