welcome you to Muscat, Oman, for the ‘McIDAS-V Tutorial with focus on atmospheric dust cases’ to be held 15-16 December 2013.

The local organizer of the event is the WMO Center of Excellence in Oman, which is coordinated by Meteorological Affairs Department, Directorate General of Meteorology and Air Navigation (DGMAN) and Sultan Qaboos University’s Remote Sensing and GIS Center.

Background

McIDAS-V is a free, open source, visualization and data analysis software package developed at the University of Wisconsin’s Space Science and Engineering Center (SSEC). It’s the fifth generation in the SSEC's 35+ year history of sophisticated McIDAS (Man computer Interactive Data Access System) software packages. McIDAS-V displays weather satellite (including hyperspectral) and other geophysical data in 2- and 3-dimensions, and can be used to analyze and manipulate the data with its powerful mathematical functions.

Scope

The event is targeted to operational meteorologists, air quality and public health managers, and early career scientists (advanced students, PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers) with interest on the Earth system sciences. They are expected to be proficient in English as a working language.

Participants will attend a tutorial that gives hands-on experience the use of McIDAS-V. The focus will be on enhancing suspended dust/haze/smoke in imagery as observed by the imagers SEVIRI on Meteosat Second Generation, MODIS on Terra/Aqua and VIIRS on NPP-Suomi, as well as on the blending of such imagery and model fields. Participants may bring their own notebook (preferably Windows 7) or use the PCs in the SQU lab. The event is a complement to the ‘3rd Training Course on WMO SDS-WAS products (satellite and ground observation and modelling of atmospheric dust)’, to be held on 8-12 December 2013 at the same venue, with a separate registration process.

Venue and dates:

The event will be held at the Sultan Qaboos University in Muscat, Oman, 15-16 December 2013, with a total duration of 10 hours.
